Speed Warm-Ups

The key to speed is to learn to develop the muscles and muscle memory in every finger so that you move quickly while remaining relaxed. There are a few simple rules to follow to develop massive speed in no time:

  • Do warm up technique exercises daily. The key is repetition.
  • Work every finger focusing on exercises that strengthen weak fingers.
  • Use proper, relaxed technique on each exercise.
  • Always use a metronome.

Here are three technique exercises that, if played daily, will boost your speed by 30 beats per minute within one week. The key to getting this speed is to start playing the exercise at a slow tempo, play the exercise at each fret on the fretboard, then repeat the exercise a few bpm (5-10). Repeat this process until you have reached a breaking point and cannot play accurately any faster.
